Globecomm Roam delivers a smart source of maritime connectivity

Hauppauge, NY, March 9, 2018 — Globecomm, one of the leading providers of maritime connectivity services has launched Globecomm Roam, providing high throughput, low-cost cellular communications in more than 140 countries.

Offering 3G, 4G and LTE services at speeds of up to 100 Mbps but at prices much lower than traditional satellite services, Globecomm Roam bundles a cellular modem, global roaming SIM card and maritime antenna to enable connectivity up to 30 miles from shoreside cell towers.

“Today’s smarter ship operations call for smarter communications; owners and managers need to stay connected, but they also need choice and to control their costs,” said Globecomm Maritime President Malcolm McMaster. “Combining robust hardware with airtime bundles that can manage access and expenditure, Globecomm Roam is a solution that combines flexibility with functionality, meaning ships never need be out of touch.”

Globecomm Roam has been engineered to interface with Globecomm’s Nimbus network management smartbox, providing seamless switching between satellite and cellular services. Users of L-Band systems can take advantage of the much lower cost of cellular communications, while VSAT users can use cellular connections in cases of ‘line of sight’ interruptions while in port or near shore, with much higher throughput than L-Band and much lower connectivity costs.

Globecomm has partnered with a global cellular service provider to enable access via a single SIM card. Customers can choose from a range of monthly bundle amounts to provide ships with plans that fit their budgets.

“While cellular roaming services can be lower cost than L-Band satellite services, the higher throughput capabilities can also lead to higher volume consumption. We have solved this problem by limiting cellular consumption to a fixed monthly fee depending on the plan selected,” adds McMaster. “Our Nimbus network control box means that users can enjoy optimized least cost and highest bandwidth connections.”

Globecomm Roam will debut at the CMA Shipping conference, Stamford, CT, March 12-14, 2018. Martin Killian, Senior Director, Product Management Global Satellite Solutions, will be speaking on the evolution of maritime connectivity and its role as the driver to a new era of shipping operations, at 10:00 on Wednesday March 14.
