In “How to Get the Best from an OnBoard Broadband Service,” Gregor Ross of Telaurus (now Globecomm Maritime) gave Lloyd’s List Ship Manager the benefit of his experience in making broadband both workable and affordable aboard ship. “Shipowners need to make sure they install firewalls,” he says, “and know how to avoid big bills.”
“I have seen computers talking away across FleetBroadband and IridiumOpenport and the owners getting a huge bill,” he reports. “I saw an owner who said they had not connected up the computer fully—certainly they weren’t using it, as they were awaiting the email software—but after the first month, the ship got a bill for $45,000. All it was for was the laptop talking to the Internet, as there was no firewall.”

In May, Globecomm was ranked 12th in New York State among large companies as one of the best companies to work for. The fourth annual statewide survey – by the New York State Society for Human Resource Management, the Business Council of New York and Best Companies Group – identifies and recognizes the best places of employment in the State of New York.
Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the best employers in the Empire State. A survey was then conducted by Best Companies Group to evaluate and rank the employers on employee satisfaction and engagement, as well as workplace practices and policies.
Dave Hershberg, Globecomm Chairman and CEO, said: “Making Globecomm a good place to work has always been a major goal of the Company. We are very proud of our great employees and this award, placing 12th in the large company category the first time we entered.”
